Justin Hamilton has carved out an incredibly successful career as a stand-up comedian, writer and stage director while maintaining his unique voice within the Australian comedy scene.
Over the course of the last 29 years, Justin has won awards for his solo stand-up comedy shows including the Director s Choice Award at the Melbourne Comedy Festival for his show Three Colours Hammo . In 2011, The Arts Monthly announced that Justin was the Comedian of the Decade. In 2019 his one-person play won the Best Comedy Show award at the Adelaide Fringe for The Ballad of John Tilt Animus . In 2023 Justin returned to stand-up comedy with his new show, Little Victories , which garnered 5-star reviews and an Adelaide Fringe Weekly Award for Best Comedy Show. This same year Justin joined Nikki Britton as the first English speaking stand-up comedians to be booked as part of the Busan International Comedy Festival in South Korea. Justin also produced Melbourne s cult live show The Shelf which he co-hosted with Adam Richard. The variety comedy shows included guests Hannah Gadsby, The Dollop co hosts Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds, Puddles Pity Party, James Acaster and Rose Matafeo.
Having toured the country to rave reviews for many years, in 2011 Justin started curating and producing his own comedy night called The Shelf, widely regarded as one of the best comedy rooms in the country.
His podcast, Can You Take This Photo Please? ran from 2010 to 2017, hitting the top 20 downloads on Australian iTunes in its first year and has featured interviews with Simon Pegg, Marc Maron, Judith Lucy, Tony Martin and US comedian Dave Anthony, amongst others.
Justin has also worked extensively in radio, most recently as a key writer for Rove s 2DayFM breakfast show Rove & Sam.
For ten years he was also the TV and movie reviewer for Perth s number one rated Mix FM, and a regular guest on Merrick Watts Triple M Drive show in Sydney.
He s still found the time to be one of Australia s premiere stand-up comedians, performing two shows in 2016, Hoot and Justin Hamilton LIVE!, as well as performing at Just for Laughs Sydney. In 2017 he revisited his origin story in Bunta Boy, a celebration and reflection on the beginning of his comedy career, which was launched as part of a duo bearing the same name.
Most recently, he was the head writer and a producer on Network Ten s Show Me The Movie! He was also the head writer and regularly appeared on Whovians, an ABC panel show hosted by Rove McManus that dissects and discusses the latest episodes of cult BBC show Doctor Who. He was also a writer and on-screen regular for Network Ten show Saturday Night Rove.
In late 2017, Justin and Rove launched a new live show at the inaugural YACK festival, The Popular Experiment a talk show combining interviews, stand up and performances. At the same festival Justin wrote, directed and starred in the premiere of a new play Three Dances for John Tilt Animus, which won Best Comedy at the 2019 Adelaide Fringe.
