PROFILE

Claire Parkinson is a British-Australian keynote speaker, bestselling memoirist and senior executive adviser whose career has taken her from maximum-security prisons to government reform, mining and multi-billion-dollar boardrooms.

Pregnant, homeless and without qualifications at sixteen, Claire began rebuilding her life one decision at a time. A remarkable career in the UK Prison Service followed. On her first day as a young prison officer, she was assigned to one of the world’s most notorious prisoners, Myra Hindley.

By 30, Claire had become a Prison Governor. By 37, she was leading major operations across London’s prison and probation system, involving nearly 9,000 staff and 33,000 offenders, including complex counter-terrorism work with police.

After migrating to Australia in 2011, Claire moved into senior leadership roles across government and mining. At OZ Minerals, she worked at the centre of enterprise performance, culture, innovation and transformation during a period of significant growth. She later became Vice President Integration Performance at BHP, helping lead the integration following BHP’s A$9.6 billion acquisition of OZ Minerals.

Today, Claire also works behind the scenes with ambitious founders, boards and project leaders at the messy point where vision, capital, government, stakeholders and delivery all have to line up. She brings structure, clarity and momentum to complex projects, helping leaders move from idea, noise and friction into execution.

At the end of 2024, Claire made another defining decision, leaving the corporate C-suite to write the book she had always believed was inside her. Her memoir, SHiTTY GRiT, became a bestseller, bringing her candid, darkly funny account of adversity, leadership and reinvention to readers around the world.

Claire does not speak about resilience as an abstract idea. She has practised it in environments where the pressure was real and the consequences mattered. Her keynotes combine unforgettable storytelling, executive credibility, sharp humour and practical insight.

Audiences leave challenged, energised and better equipped to navigate change, lead through uncertainty and make the next brave decision before they feel completely ready.

SPEAKING TOPICS

Most reinvention does not begin with confidence. It begins with a decision made while the outcome is still uncertain.

Claire has rebuilt her life repeatedly: after becoming pregnant and homeless at sixteen, after being underestimated because of her background, after a life-changing diagnosis, after migrating to the other side of the world at forty and after leaving a highly successful executive career to pursue an uncertain creative ambition.

In this candid and darkly funny keynote, Claire challenges the belief that people must feel fearless, fully prepared or completely confident before making a change. She shows how momentum is built through small, deliberate decisions and why courage often arrives after we act, not before.

Audiences will learn:

  • How to separate fear from fact during periods of uncertainty
  • How to make progress when confidence is low
  • Why identity sometimes needs to be rebuilt after disruption
  • How small decisions create meaningful momentum
  • How to take the next brave step without having the entire path mapped out

Claire has spent much of her life being underestimated. She has also spent her career making consequential decisions about people in prisons, government workplaces, executive teams and boardrooms.

Those experiences taught her that judgement is often a shortcut taken when leaders have not stopped to understand context. In organisations, assumptions about background, behaviour, confidence, education and fit can cause capable people to be overlooked while familiar-looking candidates continue to receive opportunities.

This keynote moves inclusion beyond policy, labels and good intentions. Claire demonstrates how curiosity, context and accountability can coexist, and why organisations perform better when leaders learn to identify potential that does not arrive in the expected package.

Audiences will learn:

  • How snap judgement affects talent, trust and performance
  • Why understanding context does not mean lowering accountability
  • How leaders can replace assumption with productive curiosity
  • How unconventional experience can become an organisational advantage
  • Practical ways to identify and advocate for overlooked talent

Pressure does not create leadership. It exposes it.

From volatile prison environments and counter-terrorism operations to major organisational transformation and corporate integration, Claire has led when information was incomplete, emotions were heightened and the consequences of poor decisions were significant.

She learned that calmness is contagious, clarity is more valuable than false certainty and emotional intelligence is not a soft leadership skill. In high-pressure environments, it is an operational capability.

This keynote gives leaders a practical and human approach to creating stability when circumstances are changing quickly and people are looking to them for direction.

Audiences will learn:

  • How to create stability without pretending everything is fine
  • What to prioritise when information is incomplete
  • How leaders regulate the emotional temperature of a team
  • Why clarity and consistency matter more than false certainty
  • Practical leadership rituals that strengthen trust and resilience

Ambitious projects rarely stall because they lack vision. They stall because decisions, capital, government, stakeholders, people and delivery are not aligned.

Claire has worked at the centre of complex transformations in government, mining and major corporate integration. She now works behind the scenes with founders, boards and project leaders to bring structure and momentum to projects surrounded by competing interests, uncertainty and noise.

In this keynote, Claire explores what makes change move beyond announcements, plans and good intentions. She shows leaders how to simplify complexity, create an effective operating rhythm, clarify accountability and identify the decisions that will unlock progress.

Audiences will learn:

  • How to turn complexity into a clear sequence of action
  • How to identify the real decision or blockage holding progress back
  • Why governance should enable delivery rather than slow it down
  • How leadership cadence creates momentum and accountability
  • How to align stakeholders without waiting for universal agreement
